Two miners lost their lives in a tragic accident at a potash mine in the Ural Mountains region of Perm, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

This was disclosed by the Perm Governor Dmitry Makhonin, the incident occurred during a routine inspection of a mine shaft in the town of Solikamsk. While he did not disclose further details, Uralkali, the world’s largest potash producer and the mine’s operator, provided additional information.

In a statement to the Interfax news agency, Uralkali reported that the miners were crushed to death when a salt rock deposit detached from support structures.

The company has since launched an internal investigation into the cause of the accident but assured that production at the site remains unaffected.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which handles major criminal cases, announced that it has opened a criminal investigation to determine whether industrial safety regulations were violated.

This incident follows a gas explosion at the same Uralkali mine shaft in June 2024, which left two workers injured.
