Tragedy struck within the Russian military ranks when a bomb exploded outside a building in Southeastern Moscow killing a Russian General and his deputy in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense Forces, was with his deputy when a bomb placed in scooters exploded outside a residential building killing both men on the spot.

Investigators revealed that the bomb was hidden inside an electric scooter containing 300 kilograms of TNT explosives and it was connected to two men who were seen exiting the building a few minutes before the explosion.

The Russian authorities said that Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov and his deputy were killed by the Ukrainian Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in a special operation targeting the Russian top military brass.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said it had “opened a criminal case into the murder of two servicemen”.

Svetlana Petrenko, the spokesperson of the committee further said “Investigators, forensic experts, and operational services are working at the scene,”

Adding that “Investigative and search activities are being carried out to establish all the circumstances around this crime.”

According to images published by the Russian media, the blast shattered several windows of the building and severely damaged the front door.

Lieutenant General Kirillov, had been the commander of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense Forces since 2017.

In 2023, the United Kingdom government sanctioned General Kirillov for allegedly using chemical weapons in Ukraine in the ongoing Russia’s special military operation.
