Tobias Billström, Sweden Outgoing Foreign Minister

Tobias Billström has become a former Foreign Minister of Sweden after he shockingly resigned from his post after being attributed to the man who led his country into NATO membership.

Tobias, who became the Foreign Minister in October 2022, disclosed that he would abdicate his position completely by next week. He made this announcement on Wednesday on his official X account.

In his statement he said “It is with a mixture of sadness and pride that I have today informed the prime minister that I will leave the post of foreign minister at the opening of parliament next week,” he added that “for my part, I will now leave politics entirely. This means that I am also leaving my parliamentary seat.”

He further explained that  “What I will do next is still open. But I am only 50 years old and I look forward to contributing and working hard in other contexts,”.

The 50 year old politician faced a resilient challenge while campaigning for his country’s membership into NATO after the country’s application wasn’t approved for 18 months until Hungary finally gave its consent for membership.

Sweden’s decision to join NATO came after the Invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022.

In a farewell address from Sweden Foreign Minister, Ulf Kristersson, who took to his Facebook account to express his gratitude and well wishes to his departing foreign minister, he said “The government has under Tobias’ lead clearly changed Swedish foreign policy’s priorities,” and added that he wishes him well in his future endeavors.

The Swedish Prime Minister is now tasked with appointing a new foreign minister in the coming weeks.
