After the release of the disturbing CCTV footage of the murder of Brian Thompson the United Healthcare CEO last week in New York, the police have announced the arrest of a 26-year-old man Luigi Mangione as the prime suspect in the case.
Luigi Mangione was arrested on Monday evening at a McDonald’s outlet in the town of Altoona, Pennsylvania after he was recognized by another customer who later alerted the police.
Mangione who is a graduate of an Ivy League university and also hails from one of the most prominent families in Maryland was arrested in the custody of the murder weapon and a note which showed his discontent toward the American corporate healthcare system.
The 26-year-old was revealed to have suffered from a severe painful back injury which led to his social distancing and solitary life in recent months.
In a search carried out by the police, it was discovered that Mangione carried a “ghost gun” – which could have been 3D-printed – and a loaded magazine with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The prosecutors said he was carrying a US passport and $10,000 (£7,840) cash, $2,000 of it in foreign currency.
Mangione had earlier appeared in court on Monday for the charges of carrying an unlicensed firearm and other criminal charges. However, a few hours after the court hearing, the New York investigation team found him guilty of murder and four other counts including firearms charges.
Investigators revealed the arrest of Luigi Mangione as the prime suspect was a complete surprise, as his name was not on the list of suspects before Monday.
Mangione appeared in court in calm and not remorseful after he was charged with murder charges but rather kept taking a long look around the reporters present in the courtroom.
The Investigation Team revealed that the murder of the United Healthcare CEO was a premeditated murder that had been planned by Mangione before he executed his victim.
The United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson who was the victim of Mangione’s fatal shooting was killed outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan where the UnitedHealthcare insurance company is located and he was there to host a meeting with the investors of his company.
