Israel has ended their hunt for Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader who was behind the attack on Israel on October 7 that claimed the lives of over one thousand Israelis.
Confirming the report is Israel Katz, the Israeli foreign minister, who in a message sent to Israeli counterparts in Washington and London said Sinwar has been eliminated by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
The death of Yahya Sinwar marks the highest profile killing of Hamas militants since the beginning of the conflict a year ago.
His death also comes as a political boost for the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been under pressure from the opposition government who has accused him of trying to elongate the war in order to keep him longer in office.
The Israeli prime minister took to a televised address in which he said “today we have settled the score”, describing Sinwar’s death as the “beginning of the end”.
He further said that “We have demonstrated today that all those who try to harm us, this is what happens to them,” … And how the forces of good can always beat the forces of evil and darkness. The war is still ongoing, and it’s costly.”
While addressing the people of Israel within the country and in diaspora, the Israeli prime minister said “a lot of challenges are still facing us and the country must stand firm on our ground and to continue to fight”.
Netanyahu, however, assured Israelis that he won’t relent in securing the release of the rest of the hostages in Gaza and bringing them back home safely.
Yahya Sinwar has eluded the Israeli defense forces for over a year after he executed the October 7 attack, the Hamas leader has been reported to be hiding in different enclaves in Gaza Strip.
The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) confirmed his body was part of the three bodies found in a drone search operation in northern Gaza Strip after a deadly gunfight between Israeli troops and Hamas militants.
The death of Sinwar is expected to sway the outcome of the ongoing war in Gaza and the opinions of the international community which has long called for Israel to halt its military operations in Gaza.
