Israel’s airstrikes on the city of Nabatieh which is one of the largest cities in Southern Lebanon have claimed the lives of six people including the Mayor of Nabatieh.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) unleashed a series of designated airstrikes, with one of the series hitting the building where the provincial capital crisis’s committee members were holding a meeting.
Confirming the incident is Howaida Turk, the governor of Nabatieh province, who condemned Israel’s acts and described it as a “heinous Intentional murder”.
He further said “It’s terrible destruction, the weapons that are being used are so destructive. They are damaging not only the targeted areas but also the surroundings”.
The governor indicated that a government civil defense center was also hit by an Israeli airstrike that killed Naji Fahs, a 50-year-old emergency responder who had been a member of the emergency response force since 2002.
Najib Mikati, Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister, outrightly condemned the attack, calling the Israeli airstrikes an “evil act of human savagery”.
Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon has said the suffering in Lebanon has reached an unfathomable level and has called on the rest of the world to defend the human rights of the Lebanese people.
The Israeli airstrike is seen as the most tragic since the war broke out between Israel and Hezbollah one year ago.
Israel has released a statement claiming to have hit several Hezbollah targets in Nabatieh province in the early hours of Wednesday. It said that its navy forces hit Hezbollah “launchers, military positions, and weapons caches” in southwest Lebanon.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) also carried out strikes on Dahiyeh in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Wednesday morning.
However, Hezbollah has also stepped up its continuous attacks in Israel in recent days with a drone attack on a military base in northern Israel on Sunday killing four soldiers and wounding 54.
