Two senior Iranian judges were killed in a suspected assassination at the country’s Supreme Court.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday morning in Tehran, the capital city, when a gunman entered the court and fatally shot Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh. The assailant reportedly took his own life while attempting to flee the scene, according to the judiciary’s news outlet, Mizan while one of the bodyguards was also injured in the attack.

The motive behind the assassination remains unclear, but both judges were known for their involvement in the Islamic government’s crackdown on political opponents since the 1980s.

In a statement, the judiciary’s media office characterized the incident as a premeditated assassination.

In a preliminary investigation carried out by private investigators, the report suggested that the attacker had no direct connection to any cases handled by the Supreme Court.

However, authorities are currently probing whether others were involved in orchestrating the attack.

Both judges were long-serving members of the judiciary. As Supreme Court judges, their duties included the confirmation of death sentences. Razini, 71, was one of Iran’s most senior judicial figures and had initially survived an assassination attempt.
