Typhoon Yagi, which is deemed Asia’s most powerful typhoon of this year, has killed more than hundred people in the military-controlled country of Myanmar.
Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar junta leader on Saturday made a surprise announcement calling for international aid for his country in the wake of Typhoon Yagi which has left thousands missing.
Hundreds of volunteers have answered the call to help save and find survivors of the devastating floods and Landslides that were triggered by the Typhoon.
It’s been reported that more than 350 people have died from flooding and Landslides in Vietnam, Myanmar, Lao and Thailand since the beginning of the Typhoon last week.
Critical infrastructure has been destroyed by the floods and has made rescue operations impossible due to lack of communication and inadequate road network connectivity.
According to a man in the hill town of Kalaw in Shan state, he said that “The current was very strong and even some buildings were destroyed,” he said, describing pieces of furniture being washed through the streets.
He further added that “I could see trapped families in the distance standing on the roofs of their houses,” said the man, who works for a local non-governmental group.
Another woman who survived the flood in the city Kalaw region and was heading to Taungoo said “”We want to help anyone who needs help at the moment. That is why we arranged to go to the flooding area”.
Over 3.2 million people have been displaced by war in Myanmar since a massive military takeover in 2021 and has left hundreds dead.
