Tragedy struck in northeastern Nigeria when Boko Haram attacked a fishing village in Borno state and killed at least 20 fishermen, security officials reported on Thursday.
The attack which occurred in the late hours of Wednesday morning. The attack is part of a 16-year Islamist insurgency led by Boko Haram and its faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which the terrorist organizations have laid siege against Nigeria’s northeast and has resulted in massive human and economic losses, widespread displacement, and a severe humanitarian crisis.
According to Modu Ari, a member of the civilian joint task force, the insurgents invaded the fishing village of Gadan Gari on Wednesday around 11:00 GMT, opening fire on fishermen working in the area.
At least 20 people were killed in the assault. Mustapha Kacahallah, a local resident, confirmed that his child was among the victims and that over 15 people had been buried so far.
As of this report, the Nigerian government and military have yet to issue any statements regarding the attack.
This attack is the second deadliest attack from the Boko Haram group in Nigeria in the last two months.
