Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26 year old American-Turkish lady has been reportedly killed by the Israeli Defense Forces while participating in a protest at the occupied territories of the West Bank on Friday.
Eygi, who is a volunteer for the anti-occupation International Solidarity Movement, was pronounced dead at the hospital after she was shot by the Israeli military in Beita, near Nablus.
It was gathered by eyewitnesses who were present at the incident that she was shot when a confrontation broke out between the protesters and the Israeli forces in a nearby field, when the soldiers surrounded and opened fire on a group of Palestianians who were praying.
The Israel Defense Forces in a statement said they are investigating the shooting and are in search of the suspects who instigated the attack as it was recorded that the Palestinians threw stones at the IDF who in return fired back to disperse the attackers in the process which resulted in the shooting of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi.
The US state department spokesman Matthew Miller said the department is investigating the incident and doing everything possible to gather information surrounding the shooting and death of Eygi. The White House has also condemned the killing and has said that they are “deeply disturbed” and are seeking an investigation into the incident.
Whereas Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, took to his page on X and expressed his outrage over the death of Eygi, he said “I condemn Israel’s barbaric intervention against a civilian protest against the occupation in the West Bank, and I pray for God’s mercy on our citizen Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, who lost her life in the attack.”
He further said that “ As Turkey we will continue to strive on every platform to end Israel’s occupation and genocide policy … and to make it accountable before the law for its crimes against humanity.”
Violence activities have increased against Palestinians in the West Bank since October 7 Hamas attack which claimed over one thousand lives of Israeli citizens. Palestinian officials and rights groups have long accused the IDF of standing by or even joining in settler attacks. While all Israeli settlements along the West Bank are considered illegal under international law.
