Tragedy struck in Pakistan when a bomb went off in a train station in Quetta in south-western of the country, killing 24 people and wounding dozens more.
Confirming the incident is Mouzzam Jah Ansar, the Inspector General of police for Balochistan, who revealed that the prime target of the attack was a military officer from the Pakistan Infantry School.
The bomb attack was carried out by a suicide attacker who detonated explosives inside the train station during Saturday busy morning rush hours.
The suicide bomber has been linked to Islamic Separatists Group who carried out a deadly attack in August that claimed more than 70 people in Balochistan province after separatist militants attacked police stations, railway lines and highways.
Muhammad Baloch, superintendent of police operations, said “The blast took place inside the railway station when the Peshawar-bound express was about to leave for its destination”. He further disclosed that police had begun an investigation into the attack and are working closely with the Pakistani military intelligence to fish out the orchestrators of the attack.
Dr Wasim Baig, a hospital spokesman said “So far 44 injured people have been brought to civil hospital,” and most of the wounded brought to the hospital are in critical conditions.
Pakistan has been under recurring terrorist attacks with most attacks coming from separatist ethnic militants in the south and Islamist militants in its north-west.
No terrorist group has come forward to claim responsibility for the bomb attack at Quetta’s main railway station but intelligence reports indicate it was the same Islamic separatist group that carried out the August attack in the same province.
