by Admin Sep 15, 2024 Eight immigrants have been confirmed dead while crossing the English Channel from France into the United Kingdom by the French authorities. Jacques Billant, a French Regional Prefect disclosed that the incident occurred around 1 am in the middle of the night off the coast of the northern town of Ambleteuse. He said “The toll was terrible, with eight people reported dead,” while it recorded that six people who survived the capsize were in critical condition in the hospital, including a 10-month-old baby with hypothermia. The capsized boat set off from Slack River which runs through the towns of Wimereux and Ambleteuse had 59 immigrants onboard from Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iran, and Egypt. Billant explained that, “It quickly got into difficulty and ran aground” he also revealed that “The boat was torn apart on the rocks.” The deaths make it twenty in less than three weeks, it was recorded that eight people died two weeks ago while trying to cross the English Channel. 37 immigrants have died this year while trying to the channel which makes it the deadliest casualties compared to recent years, 12 people were recorded to have died last year. The deadliest single such disaster to date was in November 2021 when 27 people died when their boat capsized. The British maritime officials reported that a total number of 22,000 immigrants have crossed the English Channel into the United Kingdom since the start of the year. The agency also disclosed that a lot of people have tried to cross the channel in the past week and that over 200 people have been rescued in the last 24 hours.
