It was a bloody disaster for the residents of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in the Silame local government area of the northwestern Sokoto State on Wednesday night when a Nigerian military jet fired missiles into the community while on a mission against Boko Haram insurgents in northern Nigeria.
Confirming the incident, Olusola Akinboyewa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, disclosed that an investigation has begun to determine the cause and actual number of casualties.
He said “The airstrikes were conducted based on credible intelligence from multiple sources, along with confirmatory aerial surveillance. Nevertheless, reports of possible harm to civilians will be thoroughly investigated”.
The Nigeria Air Force conducted airstrikes on Wednesday, which affected residents of the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in the Silame local government area of northwestern Sokoto State.
Abubakar Daftarana, the chairman of the Silame local government area, also confirmed the incident and revealed that efforts were already underway to assess the full extent of casualties and damage before the Nigerian military service arrived at the scene.
Prodesq News gathered that the Nigerian Airforce was on a mission in the Surame forest region which is a stronghold for bandits and Boko Haram insurgents.
Northern Nigeria has been plagued with several terrorism and banditry acts for more than a decade and has seen the Nigerian military engaged in its longest war since its inception.
