After the swift collapse of the Assad government and his subsequent departure to Moscow, the Syrian HTS rebels have begun to assemble a new government and have chosen Mohammed Al-Bashir as the country’s caretaker prime minister.
Al-Bashir, who is the head of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led de facto government in Idlib province is expected to lead the new Syrian transitional government as the interim prime minister until March 1, 2025. This was disclosed during his televised speech on Tuesday morning in Damascus.
The decision was made after a close meeting between the Syrian rebel cabinet and the Assad government officials on Monday.
Al- Bashar in his speech said “Today we had a meeting for the cabinet and we invited members from the old government and some directors from the administration in Idlib and its surrounding areas, to facilitate all the necessary works for the next two months until we have a constitutional system to be able to serve the Syrian people.”
The new Syrian interim prime minister further explains that “We had other meetings to restart the institutions to be able to serve our people in Syria”.
Al Bashar who has been in charge of the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG) in the Idlib province of Syria with the leadership of the HTS rebels helped organize the 12 days offensive campaign that brought down the Assad government after 50 years of the Assad family reign in the country.
Al-Bashir, who has previously held the role of development minister in the SSG now has the task of leading a war-torn country with different factions seeking help from different foreign governments.
Prodesq gathered that the new Syrian Prime Minister Bashir is a trained electrical engineer, who later received a degree in sharia and law, and has also held several posts in the educational sector.
The SSG, which has its ministries, departments, judicial and security authorities, was established in the northwest bastion of Idlib in 2017 to create a buffer between the people in the rebel-held area who were cut off from government services.
However, Ahmed al-Sharaa the leader of the HTS rebel Mohammed Ghazi Al Jalali the outgoing prime minister of the Assad government in Damascus, both discussed the handling of power in the transitional period.
The news of the appointment of Al Bashar was met with a wide celebration around Damascus, the Syrian capital.
