The dust finally settled down in the Middle East as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finally agreed to a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah of Lebanon after three months of intense fighting and destruction in both Israel and Lebanon.
The agreement was mediated by Joe Biden, the United States President, and Emmanuel Macron, the President of France based on the United Nations Security Council Resolution of 1701 which states that “The resolution demanded that Israel withdraw all its forces from southern Lebanon, and for the Lebanese government and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to deploy their forces together throughout the south. No other armed personnel would be permitted in the area”.
It further requires the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon which also includes Hezbollah. The UNSRC 1701 also recognizes the Lebanese States as the only authority in Lebanon to bear arms.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin. Netanyahu, who spoke on Tuesday evening, emphasized the necessity for the ceasefire to safeguard the citizens of Israel and would allow residents to return to their homes while Israel’s ability retains the ability to act against external threats in Lebanon diplomatically.
The Israeli prime minister said “The length of the ceasefire depends on what happens in Lebanon. We will enforce the agreement and respond forcefully to any violation. We will continue to be united until victory.”
The decision to agree to a ceasefire was not fully agreed upon by the Israeli cabinet and most called for the eradication of the Hezbollah militia wing but Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that the cease-fire deal depends on what happens in Lebanon and if the Lebanese government can keep their leash on Hezbollah.
He further explained that the cease-fire was needed so Israel could face the Iranian threats. It could be recalled that a heavy missile and drone exchange happened last month between the two countries.
Najib Mikati, the Prime Minister of Lebanon expressed support for the ceasefire while urging the immediate implementation to halt the ongoing devastation.
The cease-fire agreement was announced by the United States President, Joe Biden, who said the implementation of the cease-fire begins on Wednesday at 3 am.
The Lebanese health ministry estimates that more than 3,700 people have been killed since October 2023, with most casualties occurring in recent months.
