Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel has relieved his Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant from his duties in a surprise decision that rocked the nation.
The Prime Minister cited his decision to relieve Gallant of his duties as a matter of trust and confidence after the leaked documents revealed Israel’s masterplan to attack Iran.
The decision of the Prime Minister sparked protests across the country, which left Tel Aviv totally divided and clashes erupted between Israeli police and protesters.
The Prime Minister and his Defense Minister have been at odds over the decision of Benjamin Netanyahu in the war and also the prime minister’s refusal to agree on a prisoner swap between Hamas and Israel in the case of the Israeli hostages in Gaza.
Benjamin Netanyahu announced the decision on Tuesday in his speech hours before the commencement of the United States elections, he said “In the midst of a war, more than ever, full trust is required between the prime minister and defense minister,”.
He further explained that “Unfortunately, although in the first months of the campaign there was such trust and there was very fruitful work, during the last months this trust cracked between me and the defense minister.”
Prodesq, Political Analyst, Temitope Oladeji, disclosed that Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant have been on the same page about the war since it began a year ago but the spread of the war into Lebanon and clashes of policies between the two sides over the approach of the war may have led to the fallout.
Temitope further explained that the Defense Minister has been pushing for a more pragmatic approach to the war especially in Gaza and for a secure release of the Israeli hostages in Gaza Strip which some have been killed by Israeli airstrikes during the war.
However, Gallant in a late night new conference disclosed that he had a fallout with the prime minister of three main issues which were the: the exemptions of ultra-Orthodox men from military drafts which he considered a very controversial decision.
Gallant further explained that he pushed for the urgent need for a hostage deal and the need to establish an official commission of inquiry into the political and security failures of Oct. 7.
Gallant has been replaced by the foreign minister Israel Kartz who takes office immediately following failed attempts of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to invade southern Lebanon.
