Historic Day in Kenya as the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was impeached by the Kenyan senate for 11 gross violations of the constitution.
The Deputy President was impeached in an historic trial that stunned the people of Kenya. Rigathi was impeached in absentia due to being hospitalized.
The Kenyan Senate voted to remove Gachagua from office on five of 11 charges, his impeachment trial by the lower house National Assembly last week also concluded with his removal from office.
The 349-member National Assembly had voted by an overwhelming 282 votes on October 8 to impeach him, more than the two-thirds required.
The 59 year old popularly known as “Riggy G” was hospitalized for severe chest pains which made him unable to be present at his impeachment hearing.
Hours after his removal from office the speaker of the lower house, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula disclosed that President William Ruto sent him a message to nominate Professor Kithure Kindiki, the interior minister as the new deputy president of the country.
The speaker said “I have received a message from … the president, regarding the nomination of Professor Kithure Kindiki to fill the vacancy which has occurred in the office.”
However, Amason Kingi the speaker of the senate also said “The Senate has resolved to remove from office, by impeachment, his excellency Rigathi Gachagua, the deputy president of the Republic of Kenya.”
The nomination of Professor Kithure Kindiki was approved by the senate to succeed Rigathi Gachagua as the new deputy president of Kenya.
