It was a black Wednesday for the people of  Georgia when a single shooter opened fire on the students of Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia.

The shooter who is also believed to be a student of the school opened fire on his fellow students and killed four while nine other students were injured and were rushed to the hospital.

The shooter is currently in police custody and is also reported alive and uninjured. The shooting led to the closing down of all other Barrow County Schools.

A statement by the Barrow County School District revealed that “The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office says this is for the safety of everyone right now. Please do not visit your child’s school at this time. We cannot release students during a lockdown, the school district said in a statement. We will let you know as soon as [the sheriff’s office] says it is all clear for dismissal.”

In a statement released by President Joe Biden, the president expressed his grievances and sympathy to the families of the victims “ “Jill and I are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short due to more senseless gun violence and thinking of all of the survivors whose lives are forever changed,” Biden said in a statement. “Students across the country are learning how to duck and cover instead of how to read and write. We cannot continue to accept this as normal.”

Furthermore in his statement, the president pointed out how he has tried to battle gun violence and his efforts have been sabotaged by the Republican lawmakers. “After decades of inaction, Republicans in Congress must finally say ‘enough is enough’ and work with Democrats to pass common-sense gun safety legislation,” President Biden said.

He further disclosed that it is important to ban assault rifles in the country to reduce gun violence, he said “We must ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines once again, require safe storage of firearms, enact universal background checks, and end immunity for gun manufacturers. These measures will not bring those who were tragically killed today back, but it will help prevent more tragic gun violence from ripping more families apart.”

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his condolences and sympathy towards the family of the bereaved “My prayers are with the high school students, staff, and families affected by the senseless act of violence in Winder,” and he also guaranteed to increase patrols around schools in Atlanta.

Meanwhile, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp also extended his wishes to the family of the deceased, he said he is  “praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.”.
