Israel witnessed a huge protest against the government on Sunday in Tel Aviv which erupted after the announcement of the deaths of six Israeli hostages in Gaza Strip last Saturday and the failure of the Israeli government to secure a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas militants.
A crowd which is estimated to be about 500,000 people assembled at the ancient city of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other significant cities in Israel, the crowd gathered to demand that the Israeli prime minister and his government agree to a ceasefire and secure the release of the remaining 101 hostages that were captured by Hamas militants during the October 7 terror attack.
The Israeli government has confirmed that 33 hostages have been killed since the beginning of the war in Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas militants.
The protesters in Tel Aviv, filled the highway and held the pictures of the dead hostages while the police officers used water cannons to disperse them and 26 people were taken into custody.
The Israeli government tried to prevent the protests through the high court, finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, an influential member of Israel’s security cabinet, asked the attorney general to prohibit the strike.
A group representing the families of the abducted hostages laid accusing fingers at the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu of being the reason why the hostages were killed because he refused to secure a release deal with Hamas.
In a statement issued by the group, it said “ “were all murdered in the last few days, after surviving almost 11 months of abuse, torture, and starvation in Hamas captivity. The delay in signing the deal has led to their deaths and those of many other hostages,”.
Israeli labor leaders have called for a one-day general strike on Monday in the country.
U.S. President Joe Biden has issued a statement he revealed that he was “devastated and outraged” by the death of 23-year-old Israeli American Goldberg-Polin and the other hostages. He further said that “Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes. And we will keep working around the clock for a deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages,”.
Making the statement in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, President Biden said he is very optimistic that a ceasefire deal would be reached soon.
An epileptic negotiation is underway between the United States, Qatar and Egypt which is far from securing a ceasefire agreement despite mounting international pressure from the United States and other countries.
Khalil Al-Hayya, the chief Hamas negotiator on Sunday said the Hamas leadership has reiterated that it will not accept a ceasefire agreement unless Israel pulls out of the Gaza Strip, including the Philadelphi and Netzarim corridors.
Meanwhile the Israeli forces continued their offensive against Hamas-led militants in several parts of Gaza, with the Israeli forces targeting what it said was a Hamas command center in a former school in Gaza City.
